A case-control study on physical activity of teenagers with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract Background Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis affects 2-3% of all teenagers. It is one the most common chronic conditions in this age group, but studies on physical activity (PA) AIS patients are scarce. The available trials report conflicting findings when comparing PA children with to healthy controls. Considering its possible role development and potential benefits PA, topic should be further researched. This study aims investigate subject by a group peers. Methods included 80 teenagers (aged 11-18 years) 65 gender-matched controls from Varna, Bulgaria. Data was collected after receiving informed consent parents. Children (except AIS) were excluded. Information taken medical documentation. during last 7 days via standardized questionnaire for adolescents (PAQ-A). PAQ-A results vary 1 (lowest PA) 5 (highest PA). PAQ-A=2.75 has been found correspond minimum recommended WHO - 60mins daily moderate vigorous PA. Results None participants reported reduced due impaired or restricted functions. majority (78.8%) had mild scoliotic curvatures (Cobb angle 10°-20°). mean score cases 2.59 compared 2.88 There statistically significant difference between two groups (t = 2.722, p < 0.001). 59% under 2.75, indicating that they do not meet recommendation WHO, 31% control group. Conclusions Patients have significantly lower than their recommendations WHO. Key messages Our reveals peers despite reporting Future prospective whether plays etiology AIS.
